If I find that I need additional help to understand something contained within the course – what should I do?

In the first instance, we would encourage you to read the section again, and check the glossary which is available on each page of the course. You can also take a look at the student notes, which are available at the end of every module and provide additional information that may help you. How do I revisit previous chapters to remind me of something I might have forgotten? 

On the bottom left of each page there is an arrow pointing backwards, which can help you navigate within a specific chapter. If you need to revisit an earlier module, you can click on the De Beers Institute of Diamonds logo at the top left of the page, and navigate your way through the course menu. 

The site isn’t working very well – Is there any technical support available?

Please check you are accessing the course on the latest version of your web browser, the course is optimised for the latest versions of Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer. We also recommend you access the course over a broadband connection as opposed to mobile data whenever possible. If you are still having issues please contact us using the address.

Is there an app that I can download to complete the course?

Not at this time. You can access the course using a desktop, tablet or mobile from anywhere as long as you have an internet connection. 

Is there any additional reading to accompany the Diamond Foundation Course?

We make several references to additional reading materials throughout the course. Look out for the information bars which will direct you when this is applicable. 

What happens if I am not able to complete the course within four months?

If you do not feel that you will be able to complete the study within the allotted 4 month period, you can apply for an extension via the student support email. Your application must include a valid reason, and  De Beers Institute of Diamonds will then explore whether an extension is applicable. De Beers Institute of Diamonds reserves the right to make the final decision on any extension applications. Please contact us to discuss using the address. 

What kind of certificate will I receive upon completion of the Online Diamond Foundation Course?

You will receive a certificate of completion from the De Beers Institute of Diamonds. This will show that you have completed your studies with us. Any diamond certificate from the De Beers Group of Companies is something to be very proud of, and we recommend that all students add this to their CV and display it where possible.

How long after completion will it take for my certificate to arrive?

You will be able to print a PDF of your certificate immediately after completing the final assessment, or if you opt for a copy to be printed and posted to you, it will take a maximum of 6 weeks for your certificate to arrive at the address you provide. 

Can I share the course with a friend/ colleague?

This course has been designed for individual study. We hope that you discuss your progress with friends and family, but would encourage them to sign up to access the benefits of this course.

What course should I study after the Diamond Foundation Course?

For those who are wishing to gain more insight into the world of polished diamond grading specifically, we suggest that attend the 1 day Introduction to the 4Cs Workshop. This one day course will give you the opportunity to apply knowledge gained from the Online Foundation Course, and put it into practical application within a lab environment. The day will be spent looking at polished diamonds, and applying the basics of polished grading. For more information visit our website at

For those who wish to take their study of diamonds to an intermediate level, we suggest that you consider studying the Polished Diamond Grading Course. This involves several months of distance learning with scientific textbooks, followed by 1 week’s laboratory training at one of the De Beers Grading Laboratories.
